I came from a farmer’s family background. During my childhood, other people may consider it a struggling time, but it was a great time for me. I did many part-time jobs such as personal tutor, shop assistant, and department store assistant when I was a university student; these great experiences helped me to be who I am today. After graduating from university, I decided to pursue a career in the hotel industry and started to climb the ladder from Sales Secretary in a local hotel to Assistant Director of Sales – Corporate in an international hotel chain.
Unfortunately, my career got hit so hard from COVID-19 in 2020. I had to make the big decision to transfer my career to a new industry. I was in the hotel industry for 10 years; it was the job and the industry that I really loved, and never thought to change. I needed to change to the new industries but really had no idea what my next career would be. Therefore, I tried to reach out to people who had more experiences, and asked advice from them via LinkedIn connections. All of them helped to provide useful information and practical advice even though most of them did not know me before or just met me once in a networking event. Some of them even went out of their way to connect with their friend for me to ask for advice, and finally I got a new job in a new industry, a tech startup.
Without valuable and practical advice and suggestions from those people, I would not have found the job that I love and align with my passion for helping and encouraging people around me to build a happy and productive workplace. I personally had a chance to work with role model bosses and coworkers at happy workplaces before. It was the happiest time, and we were able to achieve many things.
I have left the hotel industry for 18 months; there are friends and colleagues in the industry who reached out to me to ask for advice and suggestions. I always tried to help them as much as I can because I really understand how great it feels when you get help from other people during tough times. Those people who helped me during my career transition inspire me to help others like they did.
For someone who is in the process of a career transition and does not know where to start…
